The official lists of the German Immigrants who landed at Philadelphia, PA prior to the Revolutionary War were translated by the Pennsylvania German Society and published under title, "The German Pioneer" by Strassberger and Hinkle. After 1728, all ships captains were required to submit the names of all German immigrants aboard their ships. In addition, the immigrants themselves were required to go to the courthouse and sign two oaths.
Johann Christian Mumma was listed as a boy under 16 years on the passenger list. Typical of German naming conventions, Johann was common "saint" name that was given to the boys and the second name was the one by which they were called. All other records for him simply use the name of Christian.
List # 21A is the captain's list of the Palentines who arrived in Philadelphia on September 18 (old style) 1732 on board the ship "Johnson" of London, commanded by David Crocket. Recorded by age groups were the following: men over 16 years, Leonard Momma; women over 14 years, Juliana Momma; boys under 16 years, Anthony Momma, David Momma, and Christian Momma; girls under 14 years, Juliana Momma, and Katharina Momma.
His first marriage was to Margaret Zimmerman was very short as she soon died, possibly during the birth of their first child, Johann Conrad Mumma. Johann Conrad went by the given name of "Conrad".
With the death of Margaret, Christian soon married Anna Maria Dorr, in 1752 and they had a daughter by the name of Anna Christina Mumma a year after they were married. The minister was Rev John Waldschmidt. Unfortunately, Christian died a year after her birth in December of 1754, leaving both children as orphans at an early age. Orphans Court records (Orphans' Court Records 1754-1760 p. 22) of Lancaster record that Leonard Mumma and Michael Weise were named guardians of both children.
On 26 Dec 1754, Anna Maria Mumma renounces and relinquishes her rights to administer her husband's estate in favor of George Mumma, his brother, and George Michael Weise
We know little as to what happened to Anna Maria Dorr Mumma. We believe that John was probably raised by his grandfather Leonard, the immigrant. He was admitted to the Muddy Creek Reformed Church on Pentecost 1769 when he was 17 years old (this would suggest a birth year of about 1752 which is in conflict with his listed birth).
