John H. Cooper. Feb 1, 1857, the rites of wedlock were celebrated between our subject and Miss Mary Moomaw. The bride was born October 29, 1839 in the Buckeye State, but was reared in this county whither her parents had removed in 1843...
The father of Mrs. Cooper was Jacob Moomaw, who was born in Virginia in 1796. He went to Ohio when a young man and there in 1821 was united in marriage with Elizabith Ohmart. That lady was born in Virginia December 16, 1798, and lived to the advanced age of eighty-six years. Mr Moomaw lived on a farm. He removal to this State was made by a wagon drawn by a four-horse team and six weeks was comsumed in the journey, during which the family camped at nightfall. Mr. Moomaw bought a farm on section 11, Martinsburg Township, and finally became an extensive agriculturist. (Note: this is just down the road from where is his buried. Our friend Mrs. Helen Johnson took my wife Joyce and I, Tom Moomaw, to the farm) He died November 16, 1847.
The paternal grandfather of Mrs. Cooper was John Moomaw, a native of Germany, who was brought to America by his parents in infancy. His mother died on shipboard during the passage. He became a farmer, living in Virginia for many years, but died in Ross Co., OH, at a ripe old age.
[Note - this last statement that John Moomaw was a native of Germany is in error]
It is likely that Jacob is living in Clark county around 1820 since this is were he signed a deed over to his brother, David, who is living in Ross county on the 25 May 1825. Jacob married his wife, Elizabeth, in Clark county in 1821. Jacob had received land in Ross county from his father, John Moomaw. This land was conveyed to him in 1821 His father-in-law, Christian Ohmet is enumerated in Springfield twp of Clark County in the 1820 census.
