Howard J. Moomaw 1923-2015
92 of Sugarcreek was called home to be with His Lord on Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2015. He was born in Sugarcreek to the late Howard Marion and Goldie Mae (Reinhart) Moomaw on Aug. 11, 1923. He was semi-retired from over 50 years of operating the four generation family business of Moomaw Chevrolet, Inc. Graduating from Sugarcreek-Shanesville High School in 1941, he attended Otterbein College before enlisting as an aviation cadet in the United States Army Air Corp. After receiving a commission as 2nd Lt. in meteorology at Chanute Field, Ill., he was assigned as base weather officer at Davis Monthan Air base in Tucson, Ariz. Following this he served two years as air traffic controller for planes flying the "Hump" in China, Burma, India Theater of WW II. He was a recipient of the Bronze Star. He then resumed his education at The Ohio State University, graduating in 1948 from the first Aeronautical Engineering class of the university. For several years he worked in preliminary design at the Curtiss Wright Aircraft Corp. in Columbus, Ohio. Continuation of the family Chevrolet business brought him back home until his retirement in 1992. He married the former Earlene Shaw of Bolivar on February 24, 1952 and they enjoyed over 63 years together. They raised their family, working together in the business and traveling to many foreign countries through Chevrolet Sales Award contests. Enjoying their children's and grandchildren's activities was a great part of their lives. Howard was a lifetime member of the Sugarcreek United Methodist Church. There, he served as Lay Leader, Sunday School teacher, Youth Fellowship Director, and Choir member. He was a 63 year member of both the Sugarcreek Rotary (recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow), and the Masonic Lodge in Dover, The Scottish Rite, Tadmore Temple in Akron, and the Tuscarawas County Shrine Club. He was also affiliated with Sugarcreek Businessmen's Association, and the Sugarcreek American Legion. He was a regular attender of the Men's Fellowship of the Dover Moravian Church. Always interested in aviation, he was a national member of EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) and Local Chapter 1077, based at the Harry Clever New Philadelphia Airport. He was privileged to take his "Final Flight" in a Cessna 172, arranged by Community Hospice, New Philadelphia, Ohio. The EAA members will perform the "Missing Man Fly Over" during the cemetery services.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Inez Earlene (Shaw) Moomaw, married 63 years, his son Randal Howard (Jane) Moomaw of Sugarcreek, Ohio, daughter Lori Moomaw of Columbus, Ohio; grandchildren, Geoff (Courtney) Helmlinger of Hinckley, Ohio, Lindsay (Jeremy) Moomaw Feador of Rocky River, Ohio, Melissa Moomaw of Columbus, Ohio, and Greg Moomaw of Akron, Ohio, and great-grandchildren Addison and Evan Helmlinger and Ellie Inez Feador. Howard's family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Walnut Hills Nursing Home, and Community Hospice of Tuscarawas County, for their compassion and care for Howard during the final stages of his life. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Sugarcreek United Methodist Church and the Community Hospice of Tuscarawas County.
Services will be held on Saturday, Sept. 19, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at Smith-Varns Funeral Home in Sugarcreek with Rev. Bill Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in East Lawn Cemetery where the Sugarcreek American Legion will conduct Military Honors. Friends may call on Friday 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
