Source: Biographical Encyclopedia of Dauphin County (p. 817):
Josiah J. Mumma, farmer, Highspire, Pa., was born in Lebanon county, Pa., February 12, 1841. He is a son of Isaac and Catherine (Kreider) Mumma. He was reared and educated in Lebanon county. He came to Dauphin county in 1864 and located in Lower Swatara township. He was married in 1862, to Miss Annie Elizabeth Ulrich, daughter of Michael Ulrich of Lower Swatara Township, a sketch of whom is given elsewhere in this volume. Mr. Mumma, during the progress of the war of the Rebellion, was patriotic and in full sympathy with those who sought to maintain the Union and perpetuate the life of the Nation. He was a young man, just beginning life and life's business on the farm, and had just married. While he was not so situated that he could enlist in the army and render service in person, he was yet entirely willing to bear his part in the patriotic sacrifices which were demanded of all good citizens. Consequently, when he was drafted, he cheerfully furnished a substitute who was young and strong and able to do full service in his name and place in the army. Mr. Mumma is a Republican. He is not an office seeker, but is active in the support of good men for all places of public trust. He has eight children: Catherine, wife of Addison Shearer, of Hummelstown, Pa.; Michael U., of Lower Swatara township; Ida Alice; Josiah J., of Lower Swatara township, Eva U., Isaac N., Eluma LeRoy, and Annie Elizabeth May. The family are members of the Highspire United Brethren Church.
Michael Ulrich, deceased, was born near Hummelstown, Pa., November 18, 1811. He moved with his parents to Lower Swatara township. He was a farmer by occupation. He died March 6, 1889. He was married to Catherine Heicher, of Lower Swatara township, who died December 18, 1883. They had three children, two of whom died in infancy. The third, Annie Elizabeth, married Josiah J. Mumma, and resides in Lower Swatara township. Mr. Ulrich and his wife are members of the Lutheran church, in which he filled the office of elder.

Luther Reily Kelker, Vol. III, (Lewis Pub. Co., New York, 1907) pp. 264-265:
Josiah J. Mumma, one of the enterprising farmers of Dauphin county, Pennsylvania, was born Feb. 12, 1841, in Londonderry township, Lebanon county, Pennsylvania, son of Isaac and Catherine (Kreider) Mumma. The history of this family dates back to a time when four brothers emigrated to America, England or Ireland. They were exiled for their religious belief. Upon coming to America, they settled in Londonderry township, Lebanon county, Pennsylvania, which at that date was in what was known as Lancaster county. One of these four brothers had a son named Jacob Mumma who became the grandfather of Josiah J. Mumma. He (ed. - Jacob) accumulated a large amount of the goods of this world, including two good farms of 288 acres in the one and 200 acres in the other. In religious belief he was a Mennonite, and in politics an old line Whig. He died at the age of 92 years. His wife lived to be about as old, and both were buried in the Lebanon cemetery. Their children were: Isaac, father of Josiah J., Jacob, Joshua, Leah.
Isaac Mumma was born (ed. - in 1808) in Londonderry township, Lebanon county, Pennsylvania, where he died in 1894, aged eighty-six years and six months. He is buried at the Campbellstown cemetery. He inherited his father's wealth and followed farm pursuits all his life. He was also an old line Whig in politics, and in religion was of the Mennonite faith. He held many local offices, including those of school director, constable and supervisor. He took much interest in the affairs of the political party to which he belonged. He was a man of great courage, and at one time was deputized by the sheriff of his county to arrest thirty-five thieves, which he performed alone and all were brought to justice. He married Catherine Kreider, born in South Annville township, Lebanon county, Pennsylvania, died at Campbellstown, Pennsylvania in 1879, aged sixty-eight years. She was the daughter of Jacob Kreider, and a very devoted Christian. Their eight children were as follows: 1, Mary, deceased, married Levi Brandt. 2, Fanny, mother of Hon. John M. Heagy, a sketch of whose family appears in this work. 3, Catharine, deceased, married Samuel Miller. 4, Jacob K., deceased, married Sarah Eshleman and resided in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. 5, Josiah J., see forward. 6, Isaac K., married Anna Grable. 7, Caroline, married Samuel Royer (ed. - The Royer Family in America gives Caroline's dates as b. May 24, 1848, d. Sept. 20, 1895. Caroline and Samuel were married on March 13, 1873.). 8, Lydia, died young.
Josiah J. Mumma was reared and educated in Lebanon county, Pennsylvania. He chose the independent life of a farmer, which occupation he followed nearly all his life. In connection with this calling, however, he has been engaged in the farm implement business for several years. He also butchered stock and attended the Harrisburg market for eight years. He came to Dauphin county in 1867 (ed. - supposedly settling at Tinian Farm, the home of Revolutionary war hero Col. James Burd) and resided there until 1880, when he returned to his native home, remained until 1886, and then returned to Dauphin county, settling in Swatara township, on a farm on which he lived seven years, after which he moved to his present residence. Mr. Mumma is a staunch Republican, not an office seeker, but ever interested in the welfare of his county and its people. He was reared in the faith of the Mennonite church, but later united with the Church of God. At this date (1906) he is a member of the United Brethren church. He has always been a liberal giver to the work of the church, including aiding in the building of the church at Highspire (ed. - probably the Highspire United Brethren Church). He is proud of his ancestry and believes it the duty of all good citizens to preserve the record made by their forefathers.
Josiah J. Mumma was united in marriage October 9, 1862 by Rev. Charles Echenhard, pastor of the Lutheran church at Middletown, Pennsylvania, to Anna E(lizabeth) Ulrich born in Swatara township, March 20, 1839, daughter of Michael and Catherine (Heicher) Ulrich. The following are the children of this union: 1, Catherine Amelia, born July 14, 1863, married Addison Sheerer (sic, or Shearer), and they have children ---Anna and Catherine; the family now reside near Mt. Joy, Lancaster county, Pennsylvania. 2. Michael Ulrich, born August 15, 1865, married Frances Rutt, by whom was born one son --- Michael (ed. - sic, Millard); this family resides near Elizabethtown, Lancaster county. 3, Ida Alice, born October 23, 1867, married Simon H. Aungst, and resides on a farm in Lower Swatara township, Dauphin county. 4, Josiah J., born October 15, 1869, married Ida Brenser (ed. - Brinser), and she is the mother of the following children --- Earl, Joseph, J. G(ould), Elsie, Ethel, Selma, and Luther, deceased. This family resides at Hummelstown, Pennsylvania. 5, Henry E., born February 27, 1872, died aged six weeks. 6, Eva U(lrich), born March 27, 1875, married Henry Kaylor --- no issue; they reside at Highspire, Pennsylvania. 7, Isaac N., born June 24, 1877, married Frances Reichert, no issue. 8, Eluma Laroy (or LeRoy), born January 14, 1882, married Elsie Brehm --- no issue. 9, Anna Elizabeth May, born May 17, 1884, died April 15, 1899.
