Sarah decided to do missionary work and went to Arizona to work with the Navajo Indians. While she was there in 1920, Sarah rescued an Indian boy who was left outside the family hut by his father to die. The mother had died during childbirth and the father could not take care of him. Sarah gave the boy the name of Charles Alexander Mumma.
On August 1, 1922, Sarah was given permission by the authoritives responsible for the Indian Reservation to remove Charles from the reservation to educate him and they moved to Phoenix Arizona.
On 9 March 1929, Sarah died from breast cancer and a cousin of Sarah, Levi Keller Brubaker, was appointed the guardian of the boy. Sarah and the boy were taken back to Pennsylvania where Sarah was buried. The boy, Charles Alexander Mumma was place in an orphanage in N.J. When the funds for the boy's care ran out, he was transferred to the Christ's Home orphanage in Westminister, PA.
