STONE, VIRGINIA LUCILLE ADAMS The best mother a stepmother could be. That was Lucille. Born in Buckholtz Texas, she lived her youth mostly in Rotan where she graduated from high school. Lucille married Walter J. Stone, a U.S. Marine officer, in 1936. They had assignments at various locations including San Diego in 1939 and moved permanently to San Diego upon Walter's retirement in 1946. Walter died in 1978 shortly after Lucille retired from the Marine Corps Post Exchange where she held supervisory positions for 35 years. Family and friends knew Lucille to be a loving, compassionate, resourceful, and generous person. She had a special love for cats, usually strays that adopted her. She fed homeless cats, families of skunks, opossums, and an occasional raccoon who came to her patio nightly. She will be sorely missed by her wild friends, as well as by the many folks who loved her deeply. Lucille enjoyed gardening, good music, traveling, reading and entertaining. She had a wonderful memory and was very self-sufficient. She contributed to Wesley United Methodist Church, The San Diego Floral Association, the Humane Society, and other worthy organizations. Lucille was preceded in death by her parents, Mack Adams Sr. and Olivia Bozeman Adams; two sisters and three brothers; her husband Walter; one stepdaughter, Ines Santisteban. She is survived by three stepdaughters: Helen Montoya, resident of Costa Rica; Melva Tuggey (Bill), and Patricia Barrer of San Diego; a brother, Mack C. Adams Jr. (Martha Ann) of Austin Texas; a nephew, John Bales of Alabama who has traveled to San Diego for the services, and numerous other nieces and nephews. She lived independently until her death at 98, result of a heart attack. Services will be held Friday September 16, at 12 noon, at Salli Lynn Chapel, Greenwood Memorial Park, with entombment at Greenwood's Mausoleum. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the American Heart Association (9404 Genesee Avenue, La Jolla, CA 92037) or San Diego Humane Society (5500 Gaines Street, San Diego, CA 92110).
