Ethel had short curly hair as a child. She was a good and quiet baby. She was born on Sunday morning. When Mabel came home from sunday school she was told to sit down and almost sat on Ethel who was on a big chair. Ethel walked to Steele High School (which was at First St and Jefferson St. I think). In 1905-06, she repeated her sophomore year. In 1906 she started her junior year but quit to sew at Miss H's about one year before Mabel bought the house on East Third. It was also said that she quit school in her junior year when her mother was sick with menopause. Ethel took care of all house chores. Nettie Hildebrand knew Mabel and needed a substitute for several months at Dr. Ginn's, so she asked Ethel. Then Drs. Bonna and Faucest medical receptionist was sick so Ethel was there several months. All these were on the 10th floor of the Reibold building in downtown Dayton. Then a Dr. S. asked Ethel to stop in and try a couple weeks for him. It worked out ok, she started at $8 per week. Dr. S. went into the service for one year and another Dr. filled in for him, but altogether, Ethel ended up working for him from 1917 to 1943, when in February the doctor died. Dr. Middleton interned with Dr. S and then helped with house calls. After Dr. S. died, Ethel worked three years for Dr. Mansur and then retired in 1946. At the time of her death, she had a stool in her bedroom that was from the parlor of her home as a child. That and other small stools that the Burns kids used in the kitchen were made by Jacob Kissinger.
