Daniel served in the civil war. He was enlisted in the service of the United States at Lancaster, Lancaster County in the State of Pennsylvania, on September 18, in the year 1861, "as a Private in Company G, commanded by Capt. Edw. McGovern, in the 79th Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers commanded by Col. Henry A. Hambright, in the war of 1861," for a period of three years. His first muster in roll is noted to be Lancaster Pa Oct 4, 1861. His name on the roll sheets have the following names written on them: Mumma Daniel B, Mumnau Daniel B, and Munna Daniel B. There is some confusion as to his discharge date in the file since he was put on furlough and never officially discharged at that time. One date has it December 11, 1866 with the date of May 10, 1862 the date of expiration of his furlough. Another date listed is June 1, 1865 stating his "furlough was Mch 15 1862." What ever is the case there is extensive documentation that Daniel left the service of our country with a chronic condition of diarrhea prior to the three years term being served. This chronic diarrhea was 100% debilitating and lasted his lifetime.
On July 16, 1866, on the Form Of Declaration for an Invalid Person, he testifies that he is 28 years old. He describes the following account of what happened to him. . "At Camp Nevin, County of blank State of Kentucky on or about December 25, 1861, through exposure to wet, rain and cold contracted diarrhea was taken to Regimental Hospital and from there to Hospital No 1 Louisville Kentucky where he remained about four weeks, when he was sent back to Regiment and remained with his Regiment until about the middle of February A.D. 1862, when he was sent to Hospital No 4 Louisville, Kentucky where he remained until about April 1, 1862 when he was sent to Fairground Bancocks, Loiusville, Kentucky where he remained until April 10 A.D. 1862 when he received a furlough for thirty days on which he went home and never again re joined his said Company for reasons as stated in his own affidavit and those of Dr. Detwiler and other hereto attached. That his application for muster out and discharge is now pending in the office of the Adjutant Gener U.S.A. That since leaving the service, this applicant has resided in the township of West Earl Lancaster Co., in the state of Pennsylvania, and his occupation has been Compulsory Idleness form physical incapacity to perform manual labor. Prior to service he was in good, sound physical health, being when enrolled a Farm Laborer. His domicile is near the public road leading from Lancaster to Reading and about one mile from Brownstown Lancaster County aforesaid." He signs his name with full signature, clearly Daniel B Mumma. One of his witnesses signs his name Elias B. Mumma; the other signs William F Leih(l), residents of West Earl twp, Lancaster Co., PA.
There is descript medical terminology used on the Examining Surgeon's Certificate to describe the condition of his body. Suffice it to say, by the time he was 45 in 1883 his muscles were in a general state of wasting, he had few teeth, he had been having 12 to 20 stools a day since 1861 and his internal organs were in a horrible state due to his inability to maintain any sort of nutrition over the years. It is also noted on this same medical form that he weighed 140 lbs and was 5' 11 1/2" in height.
There is formal notification stating "I hereby report the name of Daniel B Mumma who was a pensioner on the roll of this Agency under certificate No. 87495 and who was last paid at $39, to December 4, 1887 has been dropped because of death."
