BUS DRIVER'S PRESIDENT DIES
John R. Mumaw
John R. Mumaw, 47, president of Hazleton Local 181, Transport Workers Union of America, which has jurisdiction over regional bus drivers, died last night at 8:40 o'clock at the State Hospital, where he had been a patient the past two weeks. He resided at 100 Putnam street, West Hazleton.
Better known as "Slim", he was widely known among regional residents because of more than 25 years' service on area trolley lines and bus routes. He gave up his bus driver position with Diamond Bos Co. early this year because of his health, but remained as union president.
Last summer, he was appointed attendance officer for the West Hazleton School District.
A native of Tomhicken, he resided in West Hazleton most of his life. He began his working career with the Lehigh Traction Company as a conductor on the Freeland and McAdoo trolley routes. After the trolleys were replaced by buses in 1932, he became a driver for the Hazleton Auto Bus Co. successor to the traction company, and was assigned to the Freeland run. When the Hazleton Auto Bus Co. sold out it's regional franchises several years ago, he joined the Diamond Bus Co. and drove the Northwest section and Bethlehem routes.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian church, of this city.
He was also a member of the Presbyterian Men's League, the West Hazleton Game, Rod and Gun Club and the Pioneer Fire Co.
His wife, the former Romaine Horsfield, died in September, 1954.
He is survived by the following children: John Jr., at home; Mrs. Jean Smulligan, of this city, and Alvin of Bloomsburg. Two brothers, Paul, of Bloomsburg RD 2; William, of Hollywood; and a sister, Mrs. Emily Cawley, of Sandy Valley, also survive.
The funeral will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. from the Bachman Bros. Funeral Home with Rev. Frederick Crane, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, officiating. Interment will be in Sky View Memorial Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
