MINNIE MAE (MUMA) WILSON
Minnie Mae Muma was born January 13, 1907, the daughter of John Edwin Muma and the former Mary McLellan, at Lake Valley, Sask., Canada.
She lived with her parents on farms and in towns around Caron, Keeler, Marquis. She started school in Marquis in 1913, then attended school in Keeler. Minnie attended Normal School in Moose Jaw, starting the first part of November, 1924, until the end of February, 1925. Her Junior room teacher gave her the address to apply to the Big Stick School.District (a.k.a.: S.D.) #3691 that required a teacher by April 1, 1925. She began teaching at Big Stick on March 30, 1925. She also taught at 3 other school districts, teaching all together for 8 3/4 years.
December 23, 1933, Bob and Minnie were married in Moose Jaw at the home of retired minister, Willis G. Hancock. Robert Cochrane Wilson was born October 28, 1908, the son of Ivie Templeton Wilson and the former Isabella Hanning Cochrane. He was raised on the family sheep ranch some 18 miles north of Maple Creek, along the Big Stick Trail, and took his education at Big Stick School. He continued to work with his father after his schooling.
They lived with Bob's parents until moving a house into the same yard. They lived there until January 1, 1946, when they purchased a ranch 6 miles south from Jake Garissere with buildings situated on the NE 1/4 22-13-26-West of 3rd Meridian at the east side of the Sixteen Mile Lake. This ranch was the original Amos Blair ranch.
They continued with the sheep but gradually turned to raising Hereford cattle. The sheep were sold in 1955. Bob died very suddenly with a massive heart attach on July 26, 1958. He is buried in the Maple Creek Cemetery. Minnie continued on at the ranch until 1967 when she sold the place to her son and moved into the house she bought in Maple Creek.
In 1983, she sold her house and moved into the Southview Manor in Maple Creek where she resided until going into the hospital on September 21, 2000, then moving over to the Cypress Lodge on October 6th where she passed away on October 9, 2000.
She enjoyed playing Canasta, writing letters and visiting. At age 90, she still did her own laundry but had "Meals On Wheels" come in, "Home Care" to vacuum and dust and she used the "Seniors' Taxi Service" to go down town for various reasons.
Minnie was a member of the Patricia Rebekah Lodge #42 and the Motherwell U.C.W. (United Church Women).
To this union, three children were born: Robert (Bobby) Wilbur Wilson, Irene Isabella Wilson and Marilyn Jean Wilson.
Robert (Bobby) Wilbur Wilson was born May 3, 1935, in Maple Creek, Sask. He went to school at Big Stick and Sagathun and worked on the ranch. After his father died, he tool over ranch chores for his mother. He married on November 5, 1958, the former Margaret Rose Murray, daughter of George and Hazel Murray, from Golden Prairie. They had 3 children - Shirley Joan, Betty Elaine and Douglas Robert Wilson. Bobby passed away suddenly with a massive heart attack on April 8, 1988. He is buried in the Maple Creek Cemetery. Wife Margaret Rose and son Douglas still reside on the place. Shirley married Stewart Hammer and they have 3 children - Erik Allen, Colin Clayton and Terri Lynn Hammer. Betty married Shane Abbott and they have 3 children - Heather Margaret, Evan Robert (born & died May 3, 1989), Travis Will and Kelsey Elaine Abbott. Douglas married the former Jocelyn McKinnon.
Irene Isabella Wilson was born February 11, 1940, at the residence of Royce and Irene Smith. She took her schooling at Sagathun and Maple Creek. She continued her education, taking nurse's training, in Medicine Hat. She worked in Swift Current Hospital. She married Larry Wayne Buck, of Gull Lake, on June 15, 1962. They farm in the Gull Lake area and had a family of three children - Guy Brent, Nancy Jean and Ellen Marie. Guy married Donna Schlemko and they have three children - Jenna Mae, Brent William and Brandon Donald. Nancy was married twice. Her first husband, Billy Ellefson, was killed in a truck accident. Their daughter is Sarah Jean Ellefson. Nancy later married Gerry Nyen. Their two children are Justine Mina and Christopher Wayne Nyen. Ellen married Dan Logan and they have two sons - Aaron Daniel and Eric Wayne.
Marilyn Jean Wilson was born August 16, 1941, in Maple Creek. She took her education at Sagathun and Maple Creek. She married Raeburn Colby (a.k.a. Joe), of Golden Prairie on December 22, 1960. They operated a P.F.R.A. pasture at Forget, Sask. They had four children - Sheila Mae, Dale Robert, Wayne Douglas and Glen James. Sheila has one son - Jeremy Joseph Colby. Dale married Michelle Ciona and they have three children - Lee Michael, Kristin Dawn and Curtis Dale Colby. Wayne married Donna Shiplack and they have one daughter, Jessica Ann Colby. Glen married Tiana Carfantan and they have two children - Kyle Raeburn and Shaelynn Emily Colby.
Minnie also raised her sister Marion's daughter, Margo Zumstien, who was born on December 19, 1952. She married Stanley Price. Margo has five children - Tracey, Pamela, Darren, Catrina and Gregory and now has eight grand-children.
Minnie is survived by daughter-in-law Margaret Rose Wilson of Maple Creek; daughters - Irene (Larry) Buck at Swift Current, Sask. and Marilyn (Joe) Colby at Stoughton, Sask.; ten grandchildren, twenty-one great grandchildren; two sisters - Sarah Muma of Ottawa, Ont., and Edna Holyoke of Norman, Oklahoma; Sister-in-law Thelma Muma of Weyburn, Sask., as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents, John and Mary Muma; husband Robert C. Wilson in 1958, son Robert W. Wilson in 1988, great grandson Evan Abbott in 1989, brother John and his wife Claudia, brother Arthur Muma, sister Mabel and her husband Charles Hewlitt and sister Marion Zumstien.
The funeral was held from the Maple Creek United Church, Wednesday, October 11, 2000. Interment followed in the Maple Creek Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers were all those who shared in her life. Active pallbearers were her grandchildren - Guy Buck, Dale Colby, Betty Abbott, Glen Colby, Wayne Colby, Douglas Wilson.
Binkley's Funeral Service of Maple Creek and Leader was in charge of arrangements.
