Joan Mumma Hills, 76, of Brookings, Ore., formerly of Columbia, died Tuesday, May 15, 2001.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 2, at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W. Visitation will be at 2 p.m. Saturday.
Mrs. Hills was born July 19, 1924, to Robert and Eunice Mumma in Janesville, Wis.
She married Richard L. Hills in August 1949 in Iowa, and he survives.
She graduated from Denfeld High School and received a bachelor's degree in music education from the University of Iowa. She was a band director and music teacher in the Columbia Public Schools for 30 years. She developed the elementary band program and the honors band program. She was a member of the PTA, Quota Club, Order of the Eastern Star, Columbia Bridge Club and many local and state teachers' associations. She was Teacher of the Year in 1976 and retired from Columbia Public Schools in 1986.
Survivors also include a son, Christopher Hills of Evanston, Ill.; two daughters: Kathy Niemann of Reno, Nev., and Susie Hills of San Francisco; and two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Fred and Bill Mumma.
