Mildred E. Stambaugh

PHOENIXVILLE Mildred E. Stambaugh, 90, wife of the late J. Forney Stambaugh, died of pancreatic cancer at her home in Phoenixville on Tuesday, April 12, 2011. Born in Hanover, she was a daughter of the late Harry and Alice (Mumma) Swartzbaugh. Mrs. Stambaugh graduated from Hanover High School in 1939 and then moved to Washington, D.C., where she attended Strayer Business College and was a stenographer for the U.S. Navy Department. During World War II she served in the U.S. Marine Women Reserves in San Diego, Calif. Aided by the newly enacted GI Bill, she then earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Education from Rider College in 1949. Her career in business education included teaching at William Penn Senior High School in York from 1968 through 1974. She was a member of the choir of St. John's Episcopal Church in York and of the Phoenixville Senior Center Chorus, with whom she enjoyed performing until her final months. She also enjoyed painting, especially watercolors of landscape and nature, and she displayed her work in local art shows. She is survived by her sister, Martha; her three sons, Robert, Victor, and David; and her four grandsons, Kevin, Max, Jake, and Luke. Funeral services will be held at St. Basil the Great Parish, 2300 Kimberton Road, Kimberton 19442 on Tuesday, April 19 2011, at 11 a.m. Officiating will be the Rev. Gary T. Pacitti. Burial will be held privately at the convenience of the family in the Susquehanna Memorial Gardens in York.
