WILLIAMSPORT - Harry Edward Swartzbaugh, 78, of 16505 Virginia Ave., Homewood Retirement Home, died Monday, May 13, 2002, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Feb. 1, 1924, in Hanover, Pa., he was the son of the late Harry Wilbur and Alice Burnetta Mumma Swartzbaugh.
His wife, Alma Rose Swartzbaugh, died in 1998.
He received his bachelor's degree in music education from Peabody Conservatory of Music, his bachelor of science degree from Johns Hopkins University, and his master's degree in music education from Penn State.
He retired from the Washington County Board of Education in 1989 after 39 years as the instrumental music teacher and band director for North Hagerstown High School. He played with the Jack Frost and the Cosmopolitan Band known as The Easy Listening Combo. He was an instructor and a musician with the New Horizons Band at Hagerstown Community College.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a corporal in the U.S. Army Air Corps in Italy.
He was a member of First Christian Church.
He was a member of Washington County Retired Teachers Association, the American Federation of Musicians 770 and Longmeadow Lions Club.
He is survived by one daughter, Susan Rowe Gable of Hagerstown; two sisters, Mildred Stambaugh of Phoenixville, Pa., and Martha Cerino of Ardsley, Pa.; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Fred M. Harris will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
