Donald DeVern Mumma, long-time Chaffee County resident, died in Salida Oct. 26, 2005.
Born Dec. 3, 1921 in Dighton, KS to a farming family he moved to the Salida area in 1953 and established a cattle ranch.
He later ran his own line of trucks hauling produce from the West Coast and Mexico, worked as a supervisor of CoZinCo, was active in American Soil Conservation, Future Farmers of America, Salida Elks Lodge 808, local school, educationa and water organizations and was a 4-H leader.
Since Oct. 2004 Mr. Mumma lived in the old yellow house in Maysville and was a familiar figure to passers-by as he sat watching traffic and dreaming of making one more haul up over the Divide.
A cowboy in the finest sense of the term, he was a well known and respected member of the community who will be greatly missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents George and Leah Mumma; brother Delmar Mumma; sisters Lucille McWhirter and Irene Houghton.
Suvivors include three children: Galen Mumma, Vance Mumma and Daren Erickson; one brother Chet Mumma, and six grandchildren.
