Simon Joseph Moomaw was b. 8 August 1855 in Amsterdam, later called Daleville, Botetourt Co, VA. (Source: Geo[rge] F.P. Wanger, A Genealogy of the Descendants of Rev. Jacob Price, Evangelist Pioneer. [Harrisburg, PA: The Evangelical Press, 1926.], p. 534).
Simon was the 6th son and 8th child (of 12) of Joseph and Mary (Polly) Stover Moomaw. Three of his six brothers died in childhood ? two older and one younger, and Simon grew up as the youngest son of the family.
He died at age 82?on 30 January 1938 in Bluffton, IN. Of the three other brothers who lived to maturity, one (George) died at age 27, 3 months before the birth of his only child; the other (Calvin Fabricius, died in his 54th year?in 1894-- in Gaston, IN.) Cephas, ? a highly respected self-educated lawyer and judge who was about 6 years older than Simon, died just a week short of his 65th birthday, about a year after becoming mayor of Roanoke, VA.
Simon's education was limited to the public schools (of Botetourt Co, VA.). ( Wanger,, p. 534.
Abt. 1875 he took his first job off the farm, clerking for 2 years in a "store of general merchandise." (Wanger, 534; My guesstimate as to date.); then returned to (his father's?) farm. (Wanger, 534.)
Simon's 1st wife was Annie L Slusser, whom he married 15 December 1881.
(Richard Weber, Stover Brethren, [self published, 2001]?a very fine genealogy.)
They had 3 children ? a girl born 21 Sept 1882 and two boys (b.1885 and 1887)
When he turned 30, they moved ? by September 1885 ? to Troutville, a few miles from Daleville in Botetourt Co., VA. (Robert A. Moomaw, comp., Moomaw Mumma Mumaw- Mumaugh Genealogy, [Houston: self published], 1990), p.163.
Annie died three years later, in June 1888, when their youngest child was ca 1 year old. About six months later, on 6 Feb 1889, he married her cousin Sarah Slusser (b 5 Nov 1860). Their first child, a boy, died at birth 3 years later?in Jan 1892.
That same year he "added to the business of canning fruit and vegetables" (Wanger, p. 534)
In 1896 their second son, Earl, (Simon's 4th living son) was born and in 1900 their 3rd (his 6th) and last child, Paul, was born. All five children married? I don't know whether Earl had children, but the others did.
In Dec 1904 Simon moved his family to Muncie, IN, (about 12 miles from the town where his brother Calvin had lived before his death in 1894) where he engaged in the grocery business. About 1908 they moved to Dunkirk IN, about 15 miles away, where he farmed. After 1909 they moved again --to Bluffton, IN (about 45 mi north of Muncie) where he became "a buyer of cream, poultry, and eggs."
Simon had a physical deformity?perhaps a club foot? On his right leg he wore a shoe "with heavy rods like sled runners at least 2 inches high." Keith Rarick (a nephew or great-nephew who knew him personally), Telephone Interview, June 2000).
In 1917 he was elected City clerk of Bluffton, and in 1921 he was elected City Treasurer. In both cases he served a full 4-year term. (Wanger, 534.)
When he lived in Muncie, he was a member of the Union Grove Church of the Brethren.
