Robert F. Nation, 86, of Lititz, passed away on Sunday at Moravian Manor. He was the husband of Annette Mumma Nation. They celebrated their 66th anniversary on February 9th.
Born in Starrs Mill, GA, he was the son of the late George Washington and Jewell Clyde Whatley Nation. Robert was a graduate of Hartsell High School, Concord, NC, class of 1944 and Elizabethtown College, class of 1949 with a B.S. in Business Administration. He received an honorary degree, Doctor of Humane Letters, Elizabethtown College 1999 and received the Educate for Service to Elizabethtown College Award in 2001. Robert was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII and a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Elizabethtown. He enjoyed golf, reading, art and investing.
Robert was a Certified Public Accountant, working from 1950-65 at Lee Boyer & Co., Harrisburg, and then from 1965-70 at D.S. Sausman Enterprises, Inc., Lemoyne. He then went on to work at Sun Enterprises, Inc., Lemoyne from 1970-99. He was owner and president of the Penn Harris Hotel, Camp Hill from 1980-96.
Robert served as School Director for the Elizabethtown Area School District from 1963-69. He also served as a trustee at Elizabethtown College, Director and President of the Kline Foundation, and Director of the Health Alliance Charitable Foundation. Robert served on the Board of Directors for the HARSCO Corporation, Dauphin Deposit Bank, Hopper Soliday, Phico Insurance Co., Health Alliance of PA and Pinnacle Health System.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Susan Nation Collins, husband of Dennis of Lititz and a son, David Nation, husband of Suzan Willcox of Philadelphia; five grandchildren, Joshua and Matthew Collins, and Emily, Christopher and Robert Nation. He was preceded in death by his brother, Wayne Lee Nation and sister, Peggy Jewell Nation.
Robert was a loving father, good friend, and teacher. He was at his best in a professional setting, where he garnered the attention and respect of peers and adversaries alike. His integrity was an unquestioned strength of his character. His business wisdom and skill brought him success and distinction. He enjoyed nothing more than sharing his time and skills in a charitable, or simply a friend-in-need, context. He was the epitome of the individual cogs that made his generation "the greatest". But nothing was more important to him than his family and friends, who knew it without apprehension.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Robert and Annette Nation Scholarship Fund, Elizabethtown College Development Office, 1 Alpha Drive, Elizabethtown, PA 17022.
