Hiestand

Samuel Hiestand, born 1781, in the Page area, went to Ohio, 1804; was justice of Fairfield county, Ohio; a founder of the United Bretheran Church in Ohio; and made bishop, 1833. He was the son of Jacob Hiestand, Mennonite from Pennsylvania, accidently drowned in the Shenandoah River, and Elizabeth Brumback, descendant of Kempers. Jacob Hiestand's children moved to Ohio. Bishop Hiestand's brother, Rev. Abraham Hiestand, was pioneer minister of Washington county, Indiana. Their brothers, Joseph and John were also ministers. Abraham Hiestand, of the Page area, signs himself, 1794, "minister of the Church of the Mennonite Society." The Hiestands intermarried with Stouter, Bixler, Pilser, Strickler, and others.

Military Service
In the Revolutionary War Jacob served as a Pvt., in Capt Michael Reader's Co. Virginnia Militia. Later on, he drowned in the Shenandoah River in Shenandoah, Co. Virginia when his canoe overturned.
