Lucy Sabatura

Lucy Sabatura, 93, of Shavertown, passed away Thursday, March 24, 2011, at Mercy Center, Dallas. Born in Hazleton, Lucy was a daughter of the late Charles and Agnes Mumaw Pahler. She was a graduate of Hazleton High School, class of 1936. She was employed by the former Rosmar Dress Factory, Wilkes-Barre. Prior to moving to Shavertown in 1979, Lucy had lived in Ashley for a number of years. She had been a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Post 815, and the Wilkes-Barre Township Senior Citizens Center. She was a member of the "Happy Timmers" Singing Group and would visit senior centers and elder care facilities to entertain the residents. Lucy was also a volunteer at the Meadows Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She enjoyed gardening and loved Bingo. She will always be remembered for her laughter and her ability to entertain, whether by singing or dressing as a clown; her gift was the joy and laughter she brought to others. Lucy was a member of St. Therese's Church, Shavertown, and was active in both the church and its choir. Preceding her in death were her husband, Harry Sabatura; grandson, Paul Pickett; brothers, William, Kenneth and Paul Pahler; and sister, Dorothy Cammarota. Surviving are her son Richard Sabatura and wife, Marie, Shavertown; daughter Janice Pickett and husband, Fred, South Westerlo, N.Y.; grandchildren, Jennifer Smith and husband, James, Brian Sabatura, Nikki Pekarski and husband, Justin, and Eric Pickett and wife, Lori; great-grandchildren, Erica, Christopher, Emily and Nicholas; as well as several nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday from the Harold C. Snowdon Funeral Home Inc., 140 N. Main St., Shavertown. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10 a.m. in St. Therese's Church, corner of Pioneer Avenue and Davis Street, Shavertown. The Rev. James J. Paisley will officiate. Interment will be made in St. Nicholas Cemetery, Shavertown. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. The Sabatura family wishes to thank the staff of Mercy Center and Hospice of the Sacred Heart for the care they provided, especially nurse Judy Loeffler. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Therese's Church, 64 Davis St., Shavertown, PA 18708; or to the charity of the donor's choice.
