LIMA -- Every member of the Lima Area Woodcarvers Club has a specialty. Dave Betts of Lima works on realistic carvings. Norm Rex of Ada carves bark. Don Schlereth of Lima brings forms out of surfaces with relief carving. Jim
Mumaugh meticulously creates elaborate geometric patterns through chip carving. As for president of the club, Dena McClure, she enjoys working on "fantasy animals."
"No one can tell you what it was supposed to look like if it's not supposed to look like anything real," McClure jokes. The club meets from 7 to 9 p.m. the first and third Monday of the month in the Bath High School wood shop to draw from the local pool of talent for a regular exchange of information. The first meeting of each month a club member demonstrates a carving as other club members work along with him. The second meeting of the month is a business meeting along with a time for "show and tell." As well, during this meeting club members can share other tips they have learned.
The club welcomes any beginner who is willing to spend the hours necessary to cover the shop floor with wood chips while patiently forming a new creation and defining their own ability. The members also seem very eager to supply fresh blocks of wood to any carver who whittles the original form into a shape unrecognizable even beyond a fantasy animal.
