Garmon Brooks Smith Sr., Ph.D.

SMITH GREENVILLE, SC - Garmon Brooks Smith, Sr., Ph.D., 89, of Greenville, husband of the late Margaret Moomaw Smith, died December 12, 2010. Born in Pinehurst, NC, he was a son of the late Elmore Smith, Sr. and Ada (Medlin) Smith. Dr. Smith served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He received his Doctorate from UNC Chapel Hill in 1956, and was a professor of Education at Austin College from 1956 - 1968 and Furman University from 1968 until his retirement in 1991. Dr. Smith was a member of Buncombe Street United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday School. He served on the Board of Trustees at Savannah College of Art and Design; was an arbitrator with the Better Business Bureau; and was the loving caregiver to his wife until her death in 1999. He is survived by three sons, Garmon Smith, Jr., and his wife, Nancy, of Ada, OK, Gary Smith and his wife, Debra, of Winston Salem, NC, and Guy Smith and his wife, Lori, of Kings Mountain, NC; four grandchildren, Chad Smith, Jennifer Durham, Nicole Lillard, and Greg Smith; five great grandchildren; and a sister, Algie Crutchfield. The family would like to express their love and appreciation to his caregivers, Octavia and Marcia. In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Elmore Smith, Jr. Visitation will be 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 15, 2010, at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Northwest. The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 16, 2010, at Buncombe Street United Methodist Church, with burial following at Greenville Memorial Gardens.
