WILLIAM S. MUMMA JR., 69, of Rt. 1, died Tuesday at the Washington County Hospital. Born in Washington County, he was the son of William S. Mumma Sr. and Florence Ensminger Mumma. He was preceded in death by his wife, Caterine Hoch Mumma.
Mr. Mumma was vice-president of marketing at Potomac Edison for 43 1/2 years, retiring in 1972. He served on the draft board in the 1940s. He was a former councilman of Funkstown, and one of the founders and builders of the Funkstown Community Park. During the 1940s he served as first seargent of Company B. First Batallion 115th Infantry in the Army National Reserves. He was a member of the Christ Reformed Church and a former member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church at Lappans Crossroads.
He was also a member of the Potomac Fish and Game Club, the Improved Order of Redmen in Williamsport, the Quarter Century Club of Potomac Edison, the Blue Ridge Driver's Association, and the state and local Fraternal Order of Police. He was president of the Funkstown Baseball Club in the 1950s.
He is survived by one daughter, Jacqueline M. George, Smithsburg; three sons, William S. III, San Antonio, Tx.; James L. Sr., Williamsport; Grayson A. Sr., stationed at Montack AF Base, NY; eight sisters, Lena Moats, Belin, NM; Josephine Smith, Fairplay; Rosalie Childress, Maitland, Fl.; Myrtle Tracy, Williamsport; Ardath L. Mullendore, Funkstown; and Bernice Dockter, Ivy Martin and Catherine Delosier, all of Hagerstown; two brothers, James L. Mumma, Warren, RI; and Hershey Mumma, Arlington, Va.; 20 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
Services were held at the Rest Haven Funeral Chapel. Burial in Rest Haven Cemetery.
