The Rural Missions Cooperting Committee of the National Council of Churches and Agricultural Missions Inc. paid tribute Dec. 14 to the Rev. Dr. Ira W. Moomaw, for his leadership as agriculturist, scholar, sociologist, author and minister -- "Executive secretary of the churches' overseas rural mission for the past 18 years, Dr. Moomaw retired in December. A minister of the Church of the Brethren, he served his church as a missionary to India from 1923 to 1942. While principal of the Vocational Training College at Anklesvar, Bombay State, he wrote and translated important technical manuals and was awarded the Kaisar-I-Hind gold medal for distinguished service by the Indian Government. He also has traveled throughout Asia, Africa and Latin America.
In a personal tribute to him, at the dinner in his honor, Dr. Stanley Rycroft, treasurer of the agencies, quoted a rural missionary: 'But for Dr. Moomaw, there would be no Faith and Farm program in our part of Nigeria. It is doubtful whether there could be any rural work of this nature at all. The church owes him a great debt.'
Dr. Moomaw "retires" to continue writing and research in the field of rural reconstruction.
