--------------------------
Christina M. Mumma, 62, died peacefully Nov. 27, 2008, after a graceful and courageous 2 1/2 year battle with glioblastoma at Alaskan Manor Assisted Living Home, with her loving sister Mary by her side.
A celebration of Dr. Mumma's life will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 6 in the Cuddy Hall dining room on campus at the University of Alaska Anchorage. (Parking in the UAA parking lot is free of charge on Fridays). Individuals wishing to honor her life are encouraged to come and share their thoughts and memories of her.
She was born July 22, 1946, in New Jersey, the second daughter of Richard Dietrich Mumma and Mable Julia Lamberson. She earned a bachelor's degree in nursing at San Jose State College and a master's and Ph.D in nursing at the University of Washington. After a nearly 20-year-career in clinical and rehabilitation nursing, mostly in the Pacific Northwest, she moved to Alaska in 1989 when she joined the nursing faculty at the University of Alaska Anchorage.
After achieving the rank of full professor, she retired from the faculty in 2005 and was honored by being named Emerita Professor of Nursing.
Dr. Mumma was an active scholar who published extensively and widely in the area of rehabilitation and neuroscience nursing. She was also a creative and committed teacher who was both respected and beloved by her students; she received the Chancellor's Award for Teaching Excellence in 1999, was named the Carnegie Foundation Alaska State Professor of the Year in 2000 and received the NurseWeek Excellence Award for Teaching in 2001. In 2003, she was inducted into the Western Academy of Nursing and in 2007, in recognition of a career that exemplified excellence, she received the Professional Excellence Award from the Theta Omicron chapter of Sigma Theta Tau.
Chris loved walking outdoors daily and did this for as long as possible. She practiced Tai Chi and Qi Gong and enjoyed spending time with her Tai Chi friends every week. She especially had a love for folk and mountain music, enjoyed her garden and loved the long summer days in Alaska. Chris enjoyed traveling to Hawaii during the mid-Alaska winters. She loved her kitties: Ti Boz, who died in July of old age; and Chris was so happy when Sam and Willow could get into safe and loving homes once she was unable to care for them.
Chris accepted her medical condition and showed great perseverance in dealing with it. She was in safe and loving care toward the end of life and for that she was very appreciative as was her sister.
She was preceded in death by her parents and by her sister, Jane Ann.
She is survived by her son, Jonathan (Charlie) Mumma; her sister and husband, Mary Mumma and Doug Brown; her brother and wife, Dr. Richard and Ruth Mumma of Florida; and by her brother and wife, Julian and Carol Mumma of Nevada; as well as by a large cadre of caring friends and colleagues. Her spirit lives on in the many students she worked with over the years.
The family wishes to express deep appreciation to Chris' friends who were by her side for the 2 1/2 years of her illness: Tina Delapp, Penny Vasileff, Patti Hong, Judy Petersen, Jackie Pflaum and other friends in the "Share the Care" group that was organized under the leadership of Tina Delapp at the beginning of Chris' illness and stayed by her side until the end. Thanks to Grace, her primary nurse, Arthur and Brenda Bonglo and the staff at Alaskan Manor Assisted Living Home, Providence Hospital Palliative Care Program, Providence Hospice and Providence Horizon House for the care and concern they provided to Chris at the end of her life.
Those wishing to make a contribution in her memory may contact UAA School of Nursing, the Multiple Sclerosis Society or Providence Hospice.
