YREKA, Calif. (AP) - A helicopter delivering water to firefighters battling a blaze in the Klamath National Forest in nothern California crashed yesterday, killing the pilot who is from Boise.
Investigators were trying to determine the cause of the crash in "extremely rugged" mountain territory about 12 miles southeast of Happy Camp in Siskiyou County yesterday.
The pilot, 61-year-old Dennis L- Davis, was flying under contract with the U.S. Forest Service.
Davis was the only occupant of the helicopter.
The helicopter was carrying a large water container to refill hand-pump backpacks for firefighters on the ground. Some firefighters saw the helicopter crash and reported it to emergency dispatchers.
As of yesterday afternoon, about 22 percent of the fire was surrounded.

Friends remember Dennis Davis YREKA, Calif. ? Investigators are trying to determine why a helicopter crashed while delivering water to firefighters in the Klamath National Forest, killing the pilot.
The pilot, Dennis L. Davis, 61 of Boise, was flying a 1968 Bell Model 205A-1 Rotorcraft.
The helicopter went down Monday in rugged mountains about 12 miles southeast of Happy Camp California, said Duane Lyon, a U.S. Forest Service spokesman.
It had been carrying a large water container to refill backpacks for firefighters on the ground, and several firefighters saw it crash.
Siskiyou County Sheriff's Department says that because of the wooded mountainous area with steep terrain, they made the decision to hike to recover the body of Davis.
Davis the only person on board was under contract with the Forest Service, Lyon said.
An autopsy is scheduled for later this week.
