John Mumaw succumbs after short illness
John Mumaw one of the county's well known citizens and prominent farmer passed away at his home in this city last Monday morning. His death was caused by a complicaton of diseases and he had been ill but a short time his death coming as a shock to the entire community. Mr. Mumaw was one of the foremost agriculturalists to this section of the state. He was a careful student of the latest methods in crop growing and soil fertilizty and was known throughout the district as a judge of Shorthorn cattle. He was Vice -president of the county organization of Farmers Assoc. and served as trustee of Madison Township for two terms. He was largely intrumental in procuring the Purdue Short Courses which have been held in the city for the past two years and was a leader in practically every movement for the betterment of farming conditions in this section of the country. John Mumaw was a son of Abraham and Mary Mumaw and was born in this township September 18, 1858. His schooling was obtained in the district schools of the community and intensive study along the lines of most interest to him gave him a wide knowledge of people and economic conditions. On Oct 10, 1880 he was united in marriage to Mary Boyd and to the union twelve childred were born of whom ten survive. These are Martin L. of Elmore township John E. of Byrantsburg, Iowa, Lloyd Wendell and Joe who are in Illinois. Ray of Akron,
Colorado and Cullen B., Dale, Dewey and Mrs. R. D. Arford of this township. He also leaves two brothers and one sister as follows: Oliver of Indianapolis, Andrew of Grandfield, Okla. and Mrs. Fannie Courtney of Vincennes. Mr Mumaw was a christian in belief and practice. He was a member of Pleasant Hill Church in which body he had been a trustee for many years. The funeral service was held from that church Wednesday morning at 10:30 with Rev. McMurry in charge assisted by Rev. Roberts. Burial was made in the cemetery at that place.
