The archivist at Hiram College, Lisa H. Johnson, provided the folllowing information:
"I checked the alumni directory for the name of George Wilson Mumaw
and found that he attended Hiram in 1897. A further check in the college
catalog for 1897 confirms that he attended Hiram in the Middle Level
Preparatory Program IN 1897 but never completed the Preparatory Program
or entered the Baccalaureate (4 year) degree program at Hiram. The
Preparatory program is best compared to attending a good Prep school
today before entering college. It was phased out in 1911 when the
college decided that it was no longer needed due to the increasing
availability of good public education for secondary students. It was
rather sophisticated in its curriculum compared to today's standards,
including options for classical studies, Latin, algebra, geography,
rhetoric, government, homiletics, hermeneutics, astronomy, bible
studies, etc., depending on which Preparatory track in which the student
enrolled."
In 1900, George is listed as working for a coal company in Tesla California. The town no longer exists.
1900 Census, CA, Alameda Co., Murray Twp., Tesla Village, 14 Jun 1900, ED 333, Sheet 8
George Mumaw (name transcribed as Mermaw), lodger, b. Sep 1877, OH, occupation: stenographer
Apparently George was only at Tesla for one year and then migrated to Washington State, probably Everett, where he married Lizzie Beales in 1902. Since Lizzie was from the same county as George, it is possible that he met her at Hiram College which he attended.
(Note that Beales was misspelled in the wedding ann.)
From the Everett Daily Herald
Everett, Washington, Tuesday, July 29, 1902
Rev. R.B. Hassell, at the parsonage
of the Congregational Church, perfom-
ed the ceremony at high noon today
which united in marriage Miss Eliza-
beth E. Beals, of Ohio and Mr. George
W. Mumaw, who is connected with
the Everett Gas company, of this city.
The bride just arrived in the city this
morning in company with her brother,
Mr. Le Verne Beals, who will remain
for a few days in the city, after which
he will return to his home in Wash-
ington, D.C. Immediately after the
ceremony, Mr. and Mrs. Mumaw took
possession of their nicely furnished
little cottage at 2008 Rockefeller
Ave.
George and family are transcribed under the surname of "Munion" in the 1920 census and as "Mumau" in 1930 census for Everett, Snohomish Co., WA.

From the records of Dan Mosier:
"The information in my files on George Mumaw brackets his residency from June 1900, when the Federal Census was taken, to April 1901, when he was the Census Marshall for the Tesla School District (Livermore Herald April 20, 1901). As a stenographer and typist for the coal company at Tesla, George was making $52.50 per month (July 1900 payroll). From his position in the 1900 census record, I figured that he was lodging in the luxury of the Tesla Hotel, not the cheaper crowded bunkhouses nearby. He was also a clerk for the Corral Hollow election district (Livermore Herald Oct. 20, 1900), and a member of the Christian Endeavor Society, where at the Tesla rally he delivered a
speech entitled "Business Principles in C.E. Work" (Livermore Herald Sept. 15, 1900). He was single, as was confirmed by the information provided by Doug."
