Joan was born in Hayward, but the family lived in San Leandro. She was given the name of Joan by her father who was most upset when a second daughter was born. He was expecting a boy to be born and was planning to have the child named, "Stephen". He was very dissapointed when a girl appeared. Her mother suggested "Stephanie", but Frank simply commented "give her a simple name like Joan". Her middle name came from her paternal side where her father and grandfather were named "Frank" and her grandfather was "Francis" - so she was given "Frances".
Joan raised in the family home on Callan Avenue, San Leandro until she was married. Joan studied and graduated from San Francisco State in 1956 with a BA degree in Elementary Education. She then taught for two years at Washington Elementary School in San Leandro. This is the same school that she attended when she was a little girl. She quit teaching in 1958 with the birth of her first daughter, Jennifer. In 1969, she returned to teaching when her youngest daughter, Janet, was 9 years old and attending school herself. Joan became credentialed to teach Educationally Handicapped children which she found both rewarding and highly stressful at the same time. In 1989, after twenty successful years, she retired from teaching.
