Obituary for Rear Adm. Albert G. Mumma (The Capital, Friday, July 18, 1997 - Annapolis, MD)
Retired Navy Rear Adm. Albert G. Mumma, 91, of Gladwyne, Pa., formerly of Annapolis, died July 15 of complications of an earlier stroke at Waverly Heights, a retirement community there.
The former chief of the Navy's Bureau of Ships, Adm. Mumma was born in Findley, Ohio, and graduated from the Naval Academy in 1926. He attended the academy's postgraduate school and completed postgraduate work at l'Ecole Nationale Superieure du Genie Maritime in Paris.
During the early years of World War II he was in charge of propeller research, design and production, He was one of four naval members of the top secret ALSOS mission of the Manhattan District, which investigated German progress on the atomic bomb in 1944 and early 1945.
Later he was named engineer of the staff of Commander Naval Forces Europe and head of the Naval Technical Intelligence Division that evaluated research work of German naval scientists. Then he was assistant naval attache in London and was a member of the U.S.-London munitions boards.
After the war he was head of machinery design and deputy coordinator of nuclear matters in the Bureau of Ships and started the Navy's nuclear-powered submarine program, later turned over to Hyman Rickover in 1948. He was production officer at the San Francisco Naval Shipyard and in 1951 commanded the David Taylor Model Basin.
In 1954 he was promoted to rear admiral and became commander of Mare Island Shipyard in Vallejo, Calif. He converted the yard to nuclear submarine construction. In 1955 he was appointed chief of the Bureau of Ships at the Navy Department in Washington.
During his tenure a nuclear destroyer, cruiser and carrier were built, along with missile ships, high-speed nuclear submarines and the Polaris missile submarines.
After retiring in 1959, he joined Worthington as vice president of engineering. He became chairman of the board before retiring in 1971. President Richard Nixon appointed him chairman of the American Shipbuilding Commission that year.
Adm. Mumma was a former president and honorary member of the American Society of Naval Engineers, and former president, honorary member and fellow of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers. He held the Admiral Jerry Land Gold Medal given by the naval architects, and served as a member of the research council of the National Academy of Sciences. He also had an honorary doctorate from Newark College of Engineering.
He was a director of various New Jersey banks and Prudential Insurance Co. of America, a director and chairman of the executive committee of Kueffel and Esser Co., and a trustee of the Webb institute of Naval Architecture.
He was a member of the board of the Research Foundation of the New Jersey Institute of Technology, Drew University and St. Barnabas Hospital in Livingston, N.J.
His memberships included the New York Yacht Club, the Baltusrol Golf Club in New Jersey, the Army and Navy Club, the Mountain Lake Colony Club in Florida and the Bald Peak Colony Club in New Hampshire.
In addition to several U.S. decorations, he was knighted by the Queen of the Netherlands and held the order of Knight Grand Officer of Orange Nassau and the rank of commander in the naval order of Brazil.
Surviving are his wife, Carmen Braley Mumma; three sons, Albert G. Mumma of Merry Point, Va., John S. Mumma of Succasunna, N.J., and David B. Mumma of Elwyn, Pa.; a sister, Sarah Harral of Moorestown, N.J.; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Viewing will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at John M. Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester St. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Naval Academy Chapel, with burial in the academy cemetery.
