3966 Morton Claire Mumma graduated 27th in the Class of 1900. Born in Ohio, he quickly made his mark as a cadet and an officer. Mumma graduated from high school in 1895 and taught in a public school for a year before coming to the Academy.
After graduation, Mumma went to Cuba and then to the Philippines, where he stayed until 1906. He then served at Ft. Des Moines, IA, and was Commandant of the State University of Iowa until 1912.
He returned to the Philippines and was back in the U.S. in time to join the Pershing expedition on the Mexican border in 1916. A small-arms expert, Mumma organized and commanded a Small Arms Firing School with 1,200 officers, which was eventually consolidated with the Infantry School at Camp Benning, GA. He was a member of the Army Cavalry Team that participated in the National Match in 1907; he won a silver medal for a shooting record with the Department of the East and the Army Cavalry Teams, in 1903; a gold medal with the Philippine Division Cavalry team and a gold medal with the pistol team in 1904. He also won individual medals in 1906 and 1907, including a gold medal.
In 1919, Mumma was assigned to the State University of Iowa as a Professor of Military Science and Tactics. He served at the University during four separate assignments and retired from there in 1928.
His retirement years were as busy as his years on active duty. His classmate, GEN Robert Wood, president of Sears, Roebuck and Company, hired him for various positions. At the onset of WWII, COL Mumma served on the War Production Board as a dollar-a-year man.
In 1942, he resigned from this position and retired. COL Mumma enjoyed a short retirement before he died in 1945 at the age of 67 at his home in Beverly Hills, CA. He is buried at West Point.
