A son of Lewis and Sarah Anne Sellars Chamberlain, he married Ida Belle Mumma (daughter of Jacob and Maria L. Hempleman) in 1888. The couple had a daughter, Myra Alice Chamberlain born February 7, 1892 in Champaign County, Illinois. She married Ernest Frye on June 25, 1913 in Clark County, Ohio.
In 1894 he married his second wife, Anna M. Stewart in Clark County Ohio. Their son, Richard Stewart was born December 12, 1896 in Champaign, Illinois. Richard Chmaberlain married Dedo Elizabeth Stone (nee Boraegard) in Clark County, Ohio,
For many years he was a brakeman for the Illinois Central Railroad, serving on a fright train of the Central Division between Champaign and Centralia, Illinois. About 1899, he opened a grocery store at the corner of First and Springfield, Champaign, Illinois. A member of several Masonic organizations, he was a member of Western Star Lodge No. 240 A.F. and A.M.
