NILES - Bernice Ione (Bowerman) Mumaw, 82, of North 16th Street in Niles, passed away at Buchanan Meadows Assisted Living in Buchanan on Friday, September 21, 2007. Bernice was born on September 27, 1924, to the late Ray and Marie (True) Bowerman in Niles, Michigan. She was one of two children. After Bernice graduated from Niles High School, she wed the love of her life, Ed Mumaw, on July 3, 1945, at a ceremony in Niles. They were married for 60 years when Ed passed away in 2006. Together they had two children. Bernice was a member of St. John United Church of Christ in Niles. She worked most of her life as a wife and homemaker but also enjoyed her work at Montgomery Wards in the personnel department. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ed Mumaw; and by a brother, Cecil Bowerman. Bernice is survived by her son, Richard "Dick" (Bridget) Mumaw of Niles; daughter, Linda (Robert) Simpson of Howell, Michigan; granddaughter, Tracey (Dan) Hossfeld of Niles; great-grand daughter, Zarah Mumaw of Niles; aunt, Margaret Rankel of Mishawaka, IN; and cousin, Wuanita Knauf. A memorial service will be held to honor Bernice's memory on Friday, Sept. 28, in St. John's United Church of Christ in Niles at 11:00 a.m. Pastor Kyle Gardner will be officiating. Bernice will be inurned at the Mission Hills Memorial Garden in Niles. Memorial donations may be made in Bernice's name to the St. John's United Church of Christ, 601 Sycamore Street, Niles, MI 49120; or to Hospice at Home Inc., 4025 Health Park Lane, St. Joseph, MI 49085.
