Phillip "Phil" Lance Mumma

Phillip L. Mumma passed away with his family at his side on September 24, 2013. Phil, as his family and friends knew him, was born on May 15, 1941 in Memphis, Tennessee. He graduated from Webster Groves High School in St. Louis Missouri and continued his education at the University of Missouri on an athletic scholarship for both baseball and basketball.
After earning his Master's Degree in Journalism, he enlisted in the Navy during the Vietnam War. He eventually ended up in Oakland, California where he worked for the Port of Oakland, and later, as Associate Director of the Oakland Museum. In 1978, he and his former wife gave birth to natural born triplets, collectively weighing more than 19 pounds.
Phil was a dedicated father and coach of high school, collegiate and club sports. In the late 90's, Phil launched Sorcerer Softball, a premiere fast pitch softball organization and training facility in the East Bay. His teams won numerous championships including back-to-back national titles and the 2009 ASA 18 Gold National Championship.
Phil has helped hundreds of high school girls earn athletic scholarships to top universities. His students have achieved collegiate All-American honors, have been selected for the USA National Team and have participated in the Olympic Games.
Phil was a coach both on and off the field and had a terrific sense of humor. He is survived by his daughters Christina, Diana and Linda and grandchildren Sofia and Oliver. Friends and Family are invited to a celebration of life to be held at 6:30 pm on Monday, October 14th at Hillside Covenant Church, 2060 Magnolia Way, Walnut Creek, CA.
