TWO MINISTERS KILLED
---------------------------------
BY BEING, STRUCK BY AN ENG INE ON SUNDAY AFTERNOON
----------------------------------
While Walking On the P. S. V. Tracks In North Reading.
---------------------------------
A terrible accident took place on the P. S. V. road near the northern city limits on Sunday afternoon, which startled the community. Two men were killed and the engineer of the locomotive that struck them was the same careful, but singularly unfortunate man who struck and killed the Fritz's below Reading, and several other people before he commenced running up the Schuykill Valley.
Sunday afternoon's victims were Rev. Clayton Mumma, aged 37, residing at 123 River street, and Rev. John Conrad, age 46, of Schoeneck, Lancaster county.
The accident happened at 3:50 p.m.. The men were brothers-in-law. Rev. Conrad had just been elected pastor of the Ancient church of God on River street. He had preached his first sermon in the morning.
After Sunday school, in the afternoon, Rev. Mumma suggested they walk out to see a sick person. Rev. Conrad readily consented. They started up River street, and when near the Lebanon Valley bridge, stepped on the P. S. V. track. After they had gone a short distance beyond the bridge, the Lebanon accommodation due in Reading at 4 P.M. passed over the bridge and attracted their attention so much that they did not hear the train on the Pennsylvania railroad that was approaching them, going north. Engineer Charles Senior had charge of the engine on the P. S. V., and sounded his whistle as soon as he discovered the two men on the track. Apparently they failed to hear the warning and the next second both were struck and dashed to one side of the track. Their skulls were crushed and were otherwise hurt about the body. The unfortunate dying men were picked up, placed in the combination car and the train was backed to the Penna. depot, where Drs. Schultze and Alublenberg examined their injuries. Rev. Mumma died a few minutes after being brought to the depot and his remains were removed to his home. Rev. Conrad was taken to the Reading hospital in the Reading ambulance and on the journey he prayed fervently until he became unconscious. He died at 6:45 p.m.
In being taken to the hospital Rev. Conrad revived sufficiently to ask how and where Rev. Mumma was. He was told he had been taken home being badly hurt. "God help him," gasped the dying man
At the home of Rev. Mumma's sorrowing family it was learned that the two ministers had not been gone from Sunday school a half hour before they were run down by the train. The grief stricken congregation more than ever fully realized the terrible uncertainty of life, and the awful truth of the saying that we know not what an hour may bring forth. When the unfortunate men heard the whistle of Mr. Senior's engine, they looked up to the Lebanon Valley bridge and thought it was the whistle of the engine drawing a train over the bridge. Senior whistled again and again and reversed his engine, but it was too late. The locomotive struck them and hurled them into that eternity which their eloquent tongues bad so ably referred to but a few short hours before. When the body of Rev. Mumma was brought home his children shrieked and cried in such agonizing tones that many who had collected about the house, were moved to tears and others turned away with heads bowed in sorrow. The sight was pitiful, At the first news they hoped that there was some mistake and that the dead man was not their husband and father, It was only too true, however, and as the body was carried into the house their emotions brought tears to the eyes of many.
Information was sent to Samuel Conrad, of Denver, who came to Reading and had his brother's body taken from the hospital to the other home on North River street, where the two bodies were viewed by the coroner.
The news of the horrible accident attracted a large number of people and people flocked toward the church, many being in tears. The home of Rev. Mumma was desolation itself. He preached in the Ancient Church of God during the past 3 years, and worked at Orr, Painter & Co.'s stove works. He was a poor man and leaves a wife and 3 children - Deborah, aged 16; Ella, 14, and Clayton, 2 ½ years.
Rev. Conrad was ordained as a minister about 14 years ago, but supported his wife and 8 children on a small tract of land in Lancaster county. He frequently came to Reading and preached in the Ancient church of God.
Engineer Senior has been very unfortunate since he has been on the Penna. railroad. It was his engine which struck the wagon containing the Fritz family below the city some time ago, and his engine had previously killed several persons. He is a careful man; of fine, sensitive feelings, and was filled with horror when he once more realized that fate had again overtaken him and grim death shadowed hint to the last.
Engineer Senior is about 35 years of age, is married and resides with his family in Phila. His parents live here. He has been running on the P. S. V. road ever since it was opened.
Both the Lebanon Valley train, which the victims saw on the bridge, and the P. S. V. train, which killed them, were late. In a few seconds more Engineer Senior would have had his engine stopped.
Coroner Denhard held an inquest over the bodies at 3 p. m. and a verdict of accidental death was rendered.
The accident is another very sad warning to all, to keep off the railroad tracks under any and all circumstances.
