Conyngham Man Suicides
Gives Family Warning at Dinner Table and Then Does the Job.
Frank Mumaw, eldest son of John Mumaw, who resides with his parents on the old Philip Weaver homestead, below the Country Club, committed suicide on Saturday afternoon by hanging himself in the barn, where he was found by the members of the family some time after the deed was committed. The body was still warm.
Frank was slightly weak minded, according to those who seem to know, and while seated at the dinner table on Saturday he informed the members of the family that he had fully intended to do away with himself. No attention was paid to his remark, however, and after dinner was over he stepped outside the house, while the other members of the family went about their work.
It was some time afterward, however, that they felt as though the son might have carried out the threat made by him at the dinner table and they began a search for him. They looked in every conceivable place but could not find him. Finally they went to the barn, where they found the body dangling on a rope which had been strung over one of the rafters. The body was hurriedly cut down, but too late, as the last spark of life had fled.
There can be no reason assigned for the deed, other than a weak mind. He was well known throughout the valley and when the news was spread throughout the town, much sorrow was expressed for the parents of the young man. The deed also caused considerable excitement and along with the curiosity that is aroused in such cases, attracted a crowd of people to the scene.
He was aged 34 years and besides his parents is survived by three brothers.
