John married Mary Ann Blount in Preble County in 11 Nov 1834 as recorded in the Preble County records. His father purchased land in Preble County about this time and allowed John the son to live on it and improve it. John Jr. built a mill and this is where he was issued a patent for an improved water wheel in 1838.

After his father's death in 1849, the Preble County land was sold and the family moved to Iowa. They appear in the 1856 Iowa State census. it is interesting that his occupation was listed as that of a lawyer. The records state that they had only lived in Iowas for 1 year, so they must have arrived abt. 1855

I have searched everywhere for any trace of the family in 1860 without success. They are not obviously in Iowa, Ohio or other surrounding states. They may have been migrating back to Ohio at the time of the census.
The next appearance of the family are the Civil War records for John's 3 living sons. Because they enlisted in Hamilton, Ohio in 1861, I strongly suspect the family was back in the Butler county area by this time

Of interest, John was something of an inventor. In 1838, he was issued US Patent No. 715, dated 28 Apr 1838 - "Improvements in Water Wheels" issued in West Alexander, Preble County, Ohio. In addition, he was issued 4 additional patents in the 1860s while he was living in Middletown, Ohio so we know that he was living in Butler County during this time frame. These patents can be viewed on Ancestry.com
http://search.ancestry.com/search/db.aspx?dbid=1314
Below I extracted information from the patents, including the witnesses and the information about them from found in the 1870 census. I listed their ages which I have adjusted to the time they witnessed the patent. John himself is listed on one patent as a witness.

The last patent is extremely interesting for several reason. One reason is John died between the time that he filed his patent and when it was issued. Since he was deceased, the executor of his estate is named, his son Charles R. Mumma. This means that an estate filing must have been created for John Mumma. Estate #498 was opened for John and he was entered into the Butler County record of Deaths,Prpbate Court. The listting is as follows:
Occ: miscallenous, race: white, cause: apoplexy, residence: Middleton, Reported by: Rev Kaufman, #498, John Mumma, died 20 July 1868, married, age 58y, 11m, 16d, died Winchester, IN, born Hanover, PA
John's death date was also recorded in the Mumma/Reppeto Bible. This bible also includes the names of his children and their birth dates.
The FamilySearch website has a listing for "Ohio Deaths and Burials, 1854-1997".

So, why was John in Winchester, IN? It turns out John's father, also named John Mumma, Sr., purchased land in Wichester, IN, which I was unaware. I thought his father only bought land near Lewisburg in Preble Co., where he founded the town of "Euphemia". I received the following information from Monisa Wisener, volunteer curator, and genealogist for Randolph County.
----------------
I also knew there was a section of Winchester named "Mumma Addition" so went to our 1880 History book by E. Tucker and found the name on 5 pages in that book. I can tell you there was a John Mumma here and he bought a section of Winchester, mostly north of the Railroad on Main Street (that started about 2 blocks north of the Courthouse). That would have probably been around 1830 to 1850 (I found no dates so far) He built a brick Mill / Warehouse. Tucker (in 1880) said the Mill had stood for some 20 years. Mumma apparently added to his addition and it mentions 269 in-Lots and 9 out-Lots. The first Steam Mill was built @1835 in east part of town, Roberts built one in north part of town. Next came the brick warehouse and mills near the depot, the east end by Mumma for a warehouse and the west end by Elisha Martin. Above is basically all I read in the 1880 book, but I do know Elisha Martin and his sons were brick masons. The book also said "the building was erected as a grain warehouse by John Mumma and enlarged by E. Martin. Mill works was put in in 1867. Now the bad news, I searched 1830/40/50/60 census and did not find any Mumma in Randolph Co, He left no Will or any other records with his name. In my opinion the Courthouse records will have to be searched for him buying land and selling it. I only have land purchases up to the middle 1840s here in my collection of records located in our Museum. Is it possible you could come do that? David Wright was one of the donors of 140+ acres given to start Winchester by 1820/30 and his son-in-law sold the land to Mumma, but it does not show up in what I have here, so the Recorder's office will be the place to start. I used to work in the Recorder's office but retired in 1998, and continued to maintain the genealogy collection here in the Museum. Let me know if this will help you, and maybe I can arrange to get to the courthouse later.
--------------
So, perhaps John, the son, was in Winchester dealing with some land transactions when he died, but I don't recall seeing any land holdings in Winchester among his father's estate papers when he died in 1849.
I do believe I found John Mumma's wife (widow) and daughter in the 1870 Census, but it appears that Mary has remarried. This second marriage for Mary Ann is speculative, but it certainly fits with her youngest daughter living with her. Every one is the correct age and born in the correct states. Other researchers have made a similar connection. It does seem strange that Mary would have married again so quickly, but she was left with a 10 year old child to raise when John died. I suppose it is always possible that they were divorced not long after the daughter, Ann Mumma, was born in Iowa and perhaps Mary didn't return to Ohio. His death record states he was married, but it is unknown how reliable this information might be..

I find almost no information in the 1870 census about the children. This is strange because John Rush Mumma married Mary Repetto on 8 August, 1870, just 2 days after the 1870 census was enumerated. Their marriage is recorded in the Butler County Records. She appears in the census as shown below, but I can't find John Rush Mumma, the groom, his brother Charles (who was the executor of their father's estate per the patent record). I am now thinking they were living else, but I have looked everywhere!!!! I am almost certain that John and his bride, Josephine Repetto, probably left immediately after the wedding for Kansas or Missouri where their first child was born.

Both of the boys appear in the 1880 census in Kansas City, MO where they lived until they died. From the census, it would appear from the birth locations of their children that they left Ohio around the early 1870's and perhaps even before their father died.

This ends the information I have about John. The circumstances surrounding his death are most unusual:
1) A Ohio death record states that he resided in Butler County, Ohio, but died in Winchester, Indiana
2) There is no record of him being buried in the Middletown Pioneer Cemetery in one of the Mumma family plots.
3) No Estate papers can be found in the Butler County archives, even though he owned patents and his son, Charles, was named as his executor per his patent record.
4) His wife remarried within 2 years after his death and is living in Harrison County, MO by 1870 with her new husband and a child from each.
5) None of them can be found in the 1860 census and only his widow in the 1870 census, but she has since remarried.
