He moved to Michigan when he was 15 years old where he went to work for the Detroit and Chailechoix railroad part of the time as fireman and part time as engineer. He began work for the Santa Fe railroad as fireman in 1910 and was promoted to engineer in 1913.

Peter and his mother Sarah and Harriet stopped at Coldstream on the way to Drumbo, there they learned that Matilda was tailoress. they stopped on the way back and took her home to sew. She married Peter and lived with the family. Later they went to Michigan. Matilda was 25 when the Kester's moved to Coldstream.
