FRIEND OF THE SICK DIES AT ADVANCED AGE
--------------------------------------
Mrs. Martha Bowen Mumma died Friday afternoon after a long illness. The end was hastened by a recent stroke. She was 76 and a resident of Whitewater since 1900. In the more than 34 years since then she has nursed more people through illnesses than perhaps any other person in the community and her kindnesses caused her to be known as the city's Good Samaritan.
Mrs. Mumma was born at Williamstown, Mo., on Oct. 3, 1859, married Dr. G. S. Mumma and lived at Kirksville, MO. until coming to Whitewater in 1900. Dr. Mumma died in 1913. Surviving her are two sons, R. C. and P. R. Mumma of Janesville, and a daughter, Mrs. Fred Hanson, of Duluth. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church at 2 p.m. Monday with burial at Hillside cemetery.
