Notes:
Carl Emerson Swartzentruber, McGrawsville, went home to be with his Lord on Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2011, from North Woods Village in Kokomo. He was born March 22, 1919, in Miami County, the son of Andrew and Clara Troyer Swartzentruber. He married Esther Mughmaw on Aug. 31, 1945, and she preceded him in death on Dec. 23, 1995.
Carl was a semi-truck driver for 43 years. He also operated a trucking service for several years. He fascinated his family with stories of his trucking days. He also enjoyed fishing, motorcycling and snowmobiling.
He was a member of Howard-Miami Mennonite Church, where he served in various positions. The position he enjoyed most was serving as custodian. Carl and Esther served in that position for more than 20 years.
Carl also enjoyed going to see his grandchildren and great-grandchildren participate in their sporting events. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and greatgrandfather.
He is survived by his son, Dean Swartzentruber and wife Cleona, Fisher, Ill.; a daughter, Clarajean Sommers and husband Roger, McGrawsville; six grandchildren, Christina and Kevin Gingerich, Kokomo, Ryan and Linda Sommers, South Bend, Robert and Kristin Sommers, Sweetser, Josh and Gretchen Swartzentruber, Normal, Ill., Andy and Jill Swartzentruber, Fisher, Ill., and Heidi and Dave McGregor, Lovington, Ill.; and great-grandchildren, Kathryn Jean Gingerich, Kindra Gingerich, Carl Gingerich, Samuel Sommers, Brayden Sommers, Anika Sommers, Addison Stotler, Elexis Swartzentruber, Ethan Swartzentruber, Logan Swartzentruber, Jake McGregor and Avery McGregor.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Esther; and a sister, Vesta Hochstedler Miller.
Services are 2 p.m. Sunday at Howard-Miami Mennonite Church, 3976 E. 1400 S., Kokomo, with Pastors Randy Detweiler and Lee Miller officiating. Burial will be in Santa Fe Cemetery. Family and friends will gather from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday at the church.
