William's father, Christian Mumaw was born in PA in 1792 and died abt April, 1879 in Shenandoah Co. Christian's will is recorded in Shenandoah County, VA Will book-18-page 51, in which he names his 10 living children. On the 12th of September 1814, he married Elizabeth Walker, daughter of Henry Walker in in Shenandoah County. By her he had eleven children. Recent evidence indicates that he also had illegitimate son by Susan Coffelt. This boy was named William H. and in latter years, used the Mumaw surname and is named in Christian's Will. Christian was still marreid to his first wife, Elizabeth, when William was born. Thus, William was the youngest of Christian's twelve children. In some genealogies, this William is listed as William Henry Mumaw, but no evidence supports the middle name of "Henry". He did use the middle initial of "H". Possibly some researchers incorrectly transcribed Christian's will in which son, Henry, is listed immediately after William and the comma is difficult to read. Thus he has been listed as "William Henry".
In the 1850 census shown below, William was enumerated as a "Coffelt" and not a Mumaw at this time. It is interesting to note in the 1880 census that William also followed his grandfather's footsteps as a "wagonmaker".

There is strong evidence which suggests that William H. Mumaw himself had an illegitimate child through a liason with a neighbor, Jemima Lutz prior to his departure from Shenandoah County. A child was born b. 30 Sept 1864 and was named William Harrison Mumaw. Evidence to support this child is from this child's marriage certificate in which his father and mother are named as William H. & Jemima. William H. didn't marry Jemima, but relocated to Augusta/Rockingham Counties where he married Martha M. Adams a couple of years later on 22 Nov. 1866. William and Martha remain primarily in Rockingham County where they raise a family of 10 children.

Jemima Lutz, in the meanwhile, marries a fellow by the name of Lorenzo Grim on 19 Mar 1868 in Shenandoah County. This is recorded in the Shenandoah marriage records. Both she (age 22) and Lorenzo (age 20) are listed as being "single", which would be correct if Jemima never married William Mumaw. Jemima's parents are listed as Abraham and Eve Lutz.

Most likely Jemima died between the 1870 & 1880 Census. Lorenzo Grim is enumerated in the 1880 census, but he has a different wife by the name of Angeline. It is unclear which of these children belong to Angeline.

Since William would not have been Lorenzo Grim's biological son, William was likely placed with kin folks when his mother died sometime between 1870 & 1880. William does appear in the 1880 census, living with his maternal grandmother, Eve Lutz. Abraham has since died and Eve Lutz is a widow and has a son and his family living with her.

William Harrison Mumaw, William's illegitimate son married Elizabeth S. Eilles in 1889 in Shenandoah County, VA. Eventually William Harrison Mumaw and Elizabeth migrate to Tuscarawas Co., OH where he died in 1931. His marriage certificate indicated that his his father's name was William H. Mumaw and his mother's name was Jemima.
Much of the previous information is pure speculation based upon census information, however it all fits together as a plausible story, waiting for additional research.
