MATILDA ANN FLETCHER
Matilda was born in Indiana, apparently the first child of Samuel's second wife. She would have had four older half brothers, also born in Indiana.
In addition to Matilda, her mother, Charlotte, bore three more daughters and three sons. One of Matilda's younger sisters was Nancy Jane--she who was captured by the Cheyenne and finally bought back by the US government. Her brother, William S. Fletcher, was killed in the same raid (Plum Creek Massacre, 1864, Nebraska).
Matilda also had three more half brothers, born in Iowa to Samual's third wife, the widow, Mrs. Brown.
Matilda was born in 1841. (Two obituaries give different counties.) She was probably still there in 1847 when one of her younger brothers, John, was born. However, the Census of 1850 has the family in Marion Co., Iowa, so they must have migrated during that time interval. Samuel's next child, Emma, has Iowa listed as her birthplace (1852).
In 1860, at age 19, Matilda married John Fisher Moomaw in Sidney, Fremont Co., Iowa. It seems to have been a double wedding with her sister, Nancy Jane.
The 1880 Census for Sidney lists Matilda Ann, her husband and their sons WIlliam (14), Joseph (6) and Charles (4).
About her children, some confusion exists: her obituary indicates a total of 4 boys and one girl. Apparently, there were at least two children who died quite young . Clara and Eddie are guesses based on cemetery records from Sidney, Iowa, which indicate both died before their third birthdays. The dates for Clara, however, are impossible if she is Matilda's child. Mae's existance is based on family records: she also died very young. About William Harvey, Joseph Leslie, and Charles Lee, there is no doubt.
Matilda died 30 Dec 1908 in Sidney, Iowa.
