CATHERINE (KATE) BARNES
From her obituary:
On Monday afternoon of this week (June 16, 1909), the many friends of Mrs. Catherine Moomaw were pained to learn of her sudden death, which occurred about three o'clock.
Catherine Barnes was born in Rockwell, Iowa, on December 17, 1869, where she resided during childhood. On the 20th day of November, 1888, she was united in marriage with William Moomaw at Sidney, where Mr. Moomaw's parents resided. To them were born four children, one dying in infancy. The names of the three who survive their mother are Lewie, Gertrude and Beulah.
Mr. and Mrs. Moomaw came to Sac City about nine years ago and have resided here continuously since that time. They have formed a host of friends and acquaintances who sympathize with the bereft ones in the loss of a kind, true and loving mother and daughter.
In 1895 Mrs. Moomaw united with the St. John's Lutheran Church at Des Moines and her life has exemplified her as a dutiful Christian who always stood true to her convictions of right and wrong and did all in her power to make those with whom she came in contact happy.
Deceased was a lady of refinement and by her long residence in Sac City had made hosts of friends who learn of her untimely death with sorrow and regret. She leaves besides her husband and three children, a father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Barnes of near Nemaha, six sisters, Mesdames S.W. Kelso, O.J. Johnson, and Art Woodling of this place, Mrs. D.W. Proctor of Des Moines, Mrs. Henry Hine of near Lytton and one sister, Gertrude, who lives at home; also five brothers, Nat and Lloyd Barnes of Manning, Wood Barnes of near Lytton, Lew Barnes of Ronda and Joseph Barnes of Nemaha.
The funeral services were held this afternoon at the Christian Church, Rev. J. Irving Brown conducting the services and the remains were laid to rest at Oakland cemetery.
Among relatives from out of town who attended the funeral are the following: Mr. and Mrs. D.W. Proctor of Des Moines, Wood Barnes and wife of near Lytton, Lew Barnes and wife of Ronda, Nat and Lloyd Barnes of Manning, and Joe Barnes of Nemaha; Mr. and Mrs. H. Hine of Lytton and J.L. Moomaw and wife of Sidney, a brother of Mr. Moomaw's.
The Bulletin extends to the bereaved family its sincere sympathy in this their hour of great sorrow.
Other notes:
Born in Rockwell, Kate moved around Iowa and Nebraska with her family. In Sidney, she met and married William.
They moved to Des Moines where the first three children were born. Lowell died in Des Moines. Their last child, Beulah, was born in Nemaha, IA.
They settled in Sac City (about 1900) where Kate died in 1909 at the age of 40. Her daughters went to live with her parents (who apparently were unhappy with Will's parenting). Lewis stayed with his father.
