Notes:
Data researcher is Doug Mumma, doug@mumma.org
This is the highest person in this branch. On his son's death certificate, his father was listed as Jesse Muma, b. WV and his mother was listed as Sarah Cox, birth location unknown.
The following marriage information was provided by Bridgette Douglas bridgette.douglas@yahoo.com
Stark County marriages:
------------------------------------
David Blaugh to Sarah Cox 7 Sep 1847 Book 3 B287
Jesse Mumaw to Sarah Blough 1 Sep 1856 Book C 170
Jacob May to Sarah Blaugh 17 April 1859 Book 5 page 98
His son, Jesse is found in the 1860-1880 census living with his mother who has since remarried, but his surrname is enumerated as MOOMAW. This is the only time that spelling is used. In the 1900 & 1910 census, Jesse the son is enumerated as MUMA. In the 1920 & 1930 census he is listed as MUMAW. On his death certificate, his surname spelling is listed as MUMA and this information was provided by his daughter, Edith Evans. She listed his father's birth location as West Virginia and his mother's birth location as unknown.
In the census, Jesse's father's birth location is recorded as VA (2), OH and PA. In the 1880 census, when he is living with his mother, she lists Jesse's father's state of birth as Pennsylvania which is most likely correct. She lists her place of birth as Ohio.
In 1850, I find no Mumma/Mumaw/Moomaw families living in Stark County, but all of these surnames are all found in neighboring Tuscarawas county.
It is unclear to me as to whom the parents of Jesse Mumaw/Muma/Moomaw might be. One possibility is Jesse James Mumaw who was from Virginia. (Several census list his Jesse's place of birth as Virginia). It is possible that Jesse migrated to Ohio with his brother, Henry Mumaw in the 1850s. Somehow he and Sarah met, they marrried and she immediately got pregnant. Then possibly he left Sarah and returned to Virginia. In the 1860 census, a Jesse Mumaw is living with a woman by which he has fathered several young children. Eventually they appear to have married.
I find no other candidate Moomaw, Muma or Mumma men.
