"Vernona Ryder, 88, a resident of Magnolias Assisted Living Home, Chambersburg, [Franklin Co.] Pa., for the last three years, and formerly of 2413 Lemar Road, Mercersburg, Pa., died at 10:51 a.m., Sunday, September 25, 2005, at the home. Born November 23, 1916, in Amaranth, [Fulton Co.] Pa., she was a daughter of the late Chester and Myrtle Mills Layton. She was a member of Charlestown United Methodist Church of Cove Gap, Pa., where she was also a member of the Woman's Society and taught the primary Sunday School class for 50 years. For 18 years Mrs. Ryder participated in Bible Time Release program at Mt. View Elementary School in Mercersburg. She worked at the former U-Wanna-Wash Frock Co. of Ft. Loudon, Pa., for 28 years. Her husband, Harold H. Ryder, whom she married October 7, 1939, died October 19, 1997. She is survived by two daughters, Jane R. (Mrs. Gerald S.) Shaffer, Chambersburg, and Alma Blum, Pittsburgh, Pa.; a son, H. Henry (husband of Cindy) Ryder, Greencastle; six grandchildren and six great grandsons; two sisters: Idella Hollinger, Chambersburg, and Neva (Mrs. Charlie) Harvey, Hagerstown, Md.; two brothers: Reed Layton of Fisherstown, Pa., and Harper Layton of New Holland, Pa. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Edna Wolff. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 28, at 2:00 p.m. at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, 47 N. Park Avenue, Mercersburg, with the Rev. Terry Brosius and Chaplain Ken Poper officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Mercersburg. A viewing will be held Tuesday evening, September 27, from 7-9 p.m. in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Charlestown United Methodist Church, P.O.
