Sherman Shoup attended Washburn College (as it was called until 1941)
1905/06 through 1908/09. In 1905/06 he was registered as a Sophomore in
the School of Fine Arts which included music, art, and oratory. In
1906/07 he was a Freshman but this may have been an error because the
next year 1907/08 he was a Sophomore again. He was also listed as an
unclassified student in the College (of Liberal Arts). In 1908/09 he
was just listed as a special student in the School of Fine Arts. and
that was the last year he appeared.
"Mr. Shoup, born and reared in the great middle west, with parontage southern on one side and German-American on the other. In herits a strong American feeling. In his music he strives to be original without being bizzare and freakish, and tries to fight clear of foreign influences, not from a dislike of foreign styles of composition, but from pride in his work as an American". -Irving Park Signal
"Mr. Shoup passed away at the Hillcrest Sanitarium in Topeka last saturday at 7:00 a.m., after an illness of over six months
His devoted wife, Mary Ann, and sister, Mrs. Kunmish, did everything possible for him.
Upon the advice of his physicians, the first of last August, his wife took him to Clovis, New Mexico, where he seemed to rally and great hopes were intertained for his permanent recovery.
Mrs. Shoup came back a couple of weeks ago to look after the children and make arrangements for Mr Shoups benefit, but October 1st received a telegram that he had suffered a relaps. She took the train for Clovis and the folowing week he was brought back to Topeka
