Diana Moomau Walters

WILLIAMSBURG ? Diana Moomau Walters passed away Wednesday, May 3, 2006, at Patriots Colony, Williamsburg.
She was born Nov. 10, 1925, in Petersburg, W.Va., and became the only daughter of Dr. Glenn and Lula Moomau. Dr. Moomau was a prominent physician in the community. Diana often spoke of his commitment to providing care. This quality and attitude influenced her entire life.
Her first adventures outside of Petersburg were at Hood College and then, later she transferred to West Virginia University where she graduated. After moving to Annapolis, Md., she began a career as a social worker.
While in Annapolis, she met her husband, Robert L. Walters, who was a midshipman at the Naval Academy. After Mr. Walters' graduation, they married and began a long, happy and blissful life. Mr. Walters passed away 15 years ago.
One of the elements that defined her life was being a Navy wife. The Navy became their extended family. She supported and encouraged her husband's successes as he worked to acquire the rank of Vice Admiral.
Helping others continued to part of Diana's life. She was a volunteer with the Navy Relief, the Red Cross and other military affiliated groups. She was also a member of the Society of Sponsors (USS Salvor).
While assisting others and raising her family, she believed in preserving and teaching dignity, acceptance and self-reliance. Some of Diana's many hobbies and interests included traveling, gardening, cooking and reading.
Surviving members of her family include sons, John Walters and wife, Sandra, and their daughter, Kaitlynn, all of Hampton, Va., and Andrew Walters and companion, Claire, of Ventura, Calif.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 7, at Nelsen Funeral Home, Williamsburg, Va. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 28, at Fort Myer Chapel, Arlington, Va., with burial to follow at Arlington National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family ask that a donation be made to the National Parkinson Foundation.
