Alta H. McGuire
ONAGO- ONAGA - Alta H. McGuire, 90, of Onaga, died Thursday, December 7, 2006 at the Westy Community Care Home in Westmoreland. She was born December 19, 1915 at Onaga, the daughter of Daniel and Ethel Taylor Mumaw. She was a graduate of Denison High School and Clarks Business School in Topeka. She worked for the Santa Fe Railroad in Topeka. Alta was a member of the First Congregational UCC in Onaga where she served as a nursery Sunday School teacher, twenty-five years as Sunday School secretary/treasurer, served on the church board, and was a member of the Ladies Guild. She was a School Board Clerk of the Vienna School District. She was Triple-V 4-H community leader for twelve years, on the 4-H County Council for several years, and a member of the Onaga Homeworkers Demonstration Unit. Alta served on the Pottawatomie County Extension Executive Board for eight years and held the position of secretary and treasurer, and was treasurer of the Onaga Senior Citizens Center for fourteen years. Alta and Dorman were also members of the Topeka Garden Club. She married Dorman McGuire on February 10, 1946 at Valley Falls. They lived and worked on their farm outside of Onaga until they retired from farming in 1982 and moved into Onaga. Dorman died November 12, 1997. She was also preceded in death by one brother Dean Mumaw. Survivors include her two daughters and their husbands, Marcia and Bruce Dodson of Lenexa, and Linda and Ed Bruner of Olathe; a sister, Esta Ferrell of Minneapolis, MN; and three grandchildren, Sam Bruner , Carolyn Bruner , MN and Daniel Dodson. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 12th at the First Congregational UCC. Burial will follow in the Onaga Cemetery. Alta will lie in state on Monday at the Tessendorf-Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Onaga where family and friends will meet from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday. She will also lie in state an hour before service time at the church.
