Illness Fatal To Mrs. SPOONER
Mrs. Catherine Ruth SPOONER, resident of the Babbit-Hawthorne are for the past 14 years, died last Saturday (1 Dec) at her home in Hawthorne. Mrs. SPOONER, who was 70 years of age, had been in failing health for several months.
Born in Fredonia, KS 16 Aug 1886, she had resided in Colorado most of her life, and her family was reared in that state. With her husband Guy A. SPOONER, she had lived in Colorado Springs, Pueblo, Cripple Creek and Grand Junction.
It was from Grand Junction that the SPOONER'S moved to Babbitt in 1942. Mr. SPOONER ran the Babbitt Barber shop until two years ago when he retired.
During WWII Mrs. SPOONER was active in civic projects, particularly Red Cross work. For years she directed the Red Cross volunteer sewing project for all of Mineral County.
She was a member of Mount Grant Chapter # 24, Order of the Eastern Star and of the Hawthorne Lioness Club. She had long been active in efforts to obtain a community swimming pool.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. SPOONER is survived by one daughter, Mrs. L.A. JACKSON of Babbitt; three sons, A.E. of Grand Junction, R.H. of San Diego, G.E. of Sun Valley, CA; two sisters, Mrs. Fern GUIRAUD of Lone Pine, CA, Mrs. H.E. NORTE of Garden Grove, CA; two brothers, G.E. MUMMAH of Reno and Dale MUMMAH of Walnut Creek, CA; several granchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon (3 Dec) at the Hawthorne Funeral Home by Rev. Homer DAVENPORT pastor of the Calvary Baptist Church officiating.
Burial was in the Hawthorne Cemetery and graveside services were conducted by Mount Grant OES. Pallbearers were; William WILLOUGHBY, Lee ABLES, Homer SIEG, Robert COLMAN, Robert BROWN and Arthur GRIGGS.
