Sullivan had grown up in modest circumstances, a minister's son in Wilson County. He attended Atlantic Christian (now Barton) College in Wilson and served with the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg from 1951 to 1954, mustering out as a first lieutenant. In 1955 he married Barbara Mumaw, daughter of Lloyd Mumaw of Charlotte, a founder of Florida Steel Corp. Fueled in part by his wife's money, Sullivan became a major beer and wine wholesaler.
