Ralph E. Sturts
SANDUSKY -- Ralph E. Sturts, 87, died Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008, at Firelands Regional Medical Center, Sandusky, after a long illness.
Ralph was born Jan. 24, 1921, in Shelby and lived in the Mansfield area most of his life.
Ralph delivered the Daily Globe for several years to the west-end off Main Street in Shelby in the 1930s. He graduated from Shelby High School in 1939 and served in the U.S. Navy from January 1942 to September 1945 aboard the Cruiser U.S.S. San Juan. Ralph was employed by the Richland County Sheriff's Department, Richland County Prosecutor, and retired as Judge James Henson's Bailiff in 1986.
Upon his retirement, Ralph enjoyed 16 years in Apache Junction, Arizona. Ralph was a charter member of the Charles Hoffman Masonic Lodge No. 767, charter member of V.F.W. Lodge 7651, American Legion, Mesa and the Jim Beam Club of Columbus. Most recently, Ralph was a resident of the Ohio Veterans Home, Sandusky.
Ralph is survived by his four stepdaughters, Tammy (Joe) Bader and Cathy Cosentino of Mansfield, Midge (Jim) Taylor of Lewis Center and Jacki Shay Oen of New Knoxville; two brothers, Wayne Sturts and Delmar Sturts of Mansfield; two sisters, Gloria McNeil of Elkhart, Ind., and Carol Jean Norris of Newark; 10 grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews.
Ralph was preceded in death by his father, Will Sturts; mother, Alice Mumau Jacobs; first wife, Miriam Armstrong Sturts; and second wife, Dee Shay Sturts.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, at 11 a.m. at Lexington Community Church, South Mill Street, conducted by the Rev. Charles Tobias. Friends may call on the family one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, Ralph requested memorial contributions made to American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK 73123-1718 or can be left at the church.
