West Salem -- Bessie G. Messmore, 93, of West Salem, died Saturday, May 22, 2004, at Wooster Community Hospital. Services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Matteson Funeral Home in West Salem, with Pastor Marta Mathatas officiating. Burial will be at West Salem Cemetery. Friends may call Monday 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home, or one hour prior to the services. Memorial contributions may be made to West Salem United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 266, West Salem 44287.
She was born May 7, 1911, in Smithville to Henry and Olivia (Lynn) Schaum and married Cecil Messmore. He died in 1983. She was a homemaker all of her life and an Avon representative for 28 years. She was a member of West Salem United Methodist Church, where she was past president of UMW, was a Sunday school teacher and a prayer group leader.
Surviving are children, Robert (Nancy) Messmore of California, Kathleen (David) Howman of Lattasbaurg, Phyllis (Charles) Barnette and Roger (Cindy) Messmore, both of West Salem; grandchildren, Pam Boreman, Willie Messmore, Kelly (Randy) Bechtel, Edward (Linda) Howman, Theresa Howman, Tammy (Rick) McClure, Greg (Tina) Barnette, Lisa Topovski and Brad (Denise) Messmore; and nine great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, a son, Larry Messmore, died in 1952. Nine brothers and three sisters also died previously.
